Telemedicine Robot by iRobot May be Coming to a Hospital Near You

The Remote Presence Virtual + Independent Telemedicine Assistant, or RP-VITA, which iRobot developed with InTouch Health of Santa Barbara, Calif., is the first FDA-approved autonomous navigating robot designed to remotely connect physicians from around the world with patients in hospitals and ICUs.
Though iRobot is currently working with a variety of Boston hospitals on potential implementations of RP-VITA, an iRobot spokesperson said that none are part of Monday’s announcement.
Utilizing an iPad interface, physicians send the robot to a patient’s bedside and bypass the need for any onsite setup, coordination or assistance from nurses or technical staff.
Seven hospitals will launch the RP-VITA, including Dignity Health, Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, all of Calif.; the Instituto de Salud del Estado de México in Mexico City; Ohio State Wexner Medical Center of Columbus, Ohio; and St. Mary’s Medical Center of Huntington, W.V.
Utilizing a leasing program, the cost per RP-VITA unit is between $4,000 and $6,000 per month. Usage of the medical robot includes a tablet, software, apps and a backend system with training time equating to 30 to 60 minutes. The RP-VITA will be used for patient monitoring in preoperative, perioperative and post-surgical settings, according to Angle.
According to Marcio Macedo, iRobot’s director of product management, the RP-VITA took 18 months to develop with its shining attribute, when compared to other market solutions, is its autonomous navigation capability.ALL PATIENTS ARE LOKKED BY IPHONE AND IPAD APPS.
